Installing on Windows
The LymeScribe installer is signed — you'll see Interapp Development, Inc. as the verified publisher — but your browser and Windows may still warn you before it runs. That's expected for a new installer: Microsoft's SmartScreen reputation is based on how many people have already downloaded a file, not on anything it found wrong with it. A brand-new signed installer hasn't built up that download history yet, so it gets flagged the same way any unfamiliar file does. The app is safe. Here's how to get past each warning.
1. Your browser blocks the download
Some browsers flag the installer before it even finishes downloading, because it isn't a file they've seen many people download yet.
Microsoft Edge
- After the download finishes, open the downloads flyout (the download icon near the address bar, or Ctrl+J). The LymeScribe installer will show a warning next to it.
- Click the "…" (more actions) menu on that download item and look for a "Keep" option.
- Edge may ask you to confirm a second time (something like "Keep anyway") — confirm it.
- Open the downloaded file to continue to the SmartScreen and installer steps below.
Google Chrome
- Chrome will show the download at the bottom of the window (or in the downloads bar/bubble) with a note that the file "isn't commonly downloaded".
- Click the arrow or "…" next to the flagged download and choose "Keep".
- Open the downloaded file to continue to the SmartScreen and installer steps below.
2. "Windows protected your PC" (SmartScreen)
If a blue dialog appears saying "Windows protected your PC" or that Microsoft Defender SmartScreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting:
- Click the small "More info" link in the dialog.
- A "Run anyway" button appears at the bottom — click it.
- The installer continues normally.
3. "Do you want to allow this app to make changes?"
If Windows then asks whether to allow the app to make changes to your device, it should show Interapp Development, Inc. as the verified publisher. Click Yes. This is the normal Windows install permission prompt.
Want to double-check the file yourself?
If you'd rather verify the installer before running it, compare its SHA-256 checksum against the one we publish. Open PowerShell in the folder where you downloaded the installer and run:
Get-FileHash .\LymeScribeClient-x.y.z.msi -Algorithm SHA256
It should match: see the download page for the current value
That's it
LymeScribe installs like any other app, and from then on it updates itself from within the app — you won't need to repeat these steps. If anything looks off or you get stuck, email webinquiry@iadev.net and I'll help.
